Aluminosilicate gage glass has a high resistance to heat and alkalis
in comparison to borosilicate glass. Aluminosilicate gage glass
is used in high temperature and pressure applications that exceed the
limitations of borosilicate.
Aluminosilicate gage glass has been tempered to strengthen the glass
to help it withstand the mounting loads, high pressures, temperature
gradients, and thermal shocks that may be encountered in service.
Aluminosilicate gage glass used in corrosive service
such as acid, bases, and steam may exhibit different rates of
corrosion
than borosilicate and should be inspected daily for evidence of
corrosive attack until the need for replacement becomes apparent.
The rate of corrosion of aluminosilicate in acid, caustic solutions
and steam applications may be particularly greater than borosilicate.
To preserve the performance of transparent gage glass, the inner
surface of the glass must be protected against chemical attack with a
shield. The most commonly used shield is mica, however,
other shields are available.
Reflex gage glass cannot be shielded.
